Reinstatement of Development Aid
That this Assembly recognises the importance of overseas development aid in providing lifesaving support to those that are displaced, threatened by war or living in famine and absolute poverty; acknowledges the integral role that aid organisations play in supporting efforts to build peace, prevent forced migration and improve health outcomes in low-income countries; condemns the British Government's decision to cut overseas development aid by from 0.5 per cent to 0. 3 per cent of Gross National Income, which is below the OECD average; further condemns the British Government's intention to invest £6.7 billion by 2027-28 in militarisation and weapons of war while cutting support for the most vulnerable; recognises that the British Government’s foreign policy and arms trade often undermine the efforts of overseas development organisations; and reiterates the call on the British Government from the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies NI, representing the local international humanitarian and development sector here, to reverse this disgraceful decision and reinstate money to its overseas development aid budget.
