Text

On the first instance, the Member can invoke his right as someone born on the island of Ireland to have an Irish passport and therefore not have to go through that process. Secondly, the Minister referred to the application to the biometrics commissioner, and I will talk in more detail about our concerns on that. There are worries about the independence of that person, who will, ultimately, still be answerable to the PSNI. The concern is that there is a presumption that someone who has been arrested is more likely to commit another crime. We are worried about the proportionality element.
