Text
An issue that has been brought to my attention by a number of my constituents is the consultation on the employment support scheme. That scheme could be aptly described as "small but mighty". It supports 249 people with complex disabilities across the North, enabling them to work in society. The scheme closed to new applicants in 2006, which means that the 249 people have been in the scheme for a number of years and are comfortable in their roles and enjoy them. Our party has submitted a response to the consultation. We urge the Department to retain the scheme, given the value that it brings to people and the fact that it allows those with complex disabilities to remain in work, something that is recognised as their right by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
