Protect the All-Island Tourism Sector from the Impact of the Electronic Travel Authorisation Scheme
That this Assembly acknowledges the huge contribution made by our tourism industry and its wider importance to the all-island economy; notes the findings of the joint Ulster University and Dublin City University May 2024 report, Tourism on the Island of Ireland, which found that the tourism sector provided €17 billion in gross value added and 300,000 jobs across the island; commends the many tourism operators who have built a strong sector in recent years; further acknowledges the real concerns expressed within the tourism industry in relation to the negative impact of the recent imposition of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme by the British Government; recognises that recent figures from the Department for the Economy indicate that 67% of international tourists enter this jurisdiction by crossing the border; further recognises that the ETA scheme will add an additional cost and administrative burden to thousands of tourists; and calls on the British Government to recognise the unique situation on the island of Ireland and introduce an exemption to the ETA scheme for tourists visiting the island of Ireland.
