Text

I highlight the continual failure of the Executive to deal with the scourge of drugs on our streets. Drugs are destroying lives, families and our communities daily. That fact is often unspoken in the House, but it needs to be called out because of the huge damage that it causes to people throughout our communities. In 2024 alone, the number of drug-related deaths recorded in Northern Ireland was 251. Of those, 219 were drug misuse deaths. Another 397 deaths were recorded as having alcohol-specific causes. Those numbers are very serious, because they are only what has been recorded. I argue strongly that they may not reflect the real picture. The reality is that, behind all those numbers, there are human lives, with people trapped in addictions that they cannot get out of. We see parents burying children, children losing parents and families watching loved ones crumble and fall apart, consumed by addiction. There is a deeply sinister side to the issue that we must all call out in the House. Vulnerable people, particularly young people, in our society are being entrapped, threatened and used as drug mules by faceless gangsters who bring that poison into our communities. Young people are being exploited because they are vulnerable. They are drawn in, pulled into debt and intimidated or frightened into carrying or selling drugs by criminals who stay safely and cowardly in the shadows of our society. We need to go after those at the top. We need to see the Justice Minister wage a war on drug dealers in our communities and the Health Minister launch greater support for those who are entrapped by addiction and ensure that people get that support when and if they need it. We also, however, need to recognise the fundamental difference between the criminal who exploits addiction and the person who is trapped in addiction. One needs to face the full rigours of the justice system, and the other needs help. Every day in my constituency, I see families at breaking point, not knowing what to do or who to turn to. They depend on a system that is simply running like a conveyor belt and not supporting those who need it most. The justice system needs to pursue those who sell that poison and exploit the vulnerable in our communities. The health system needs to catch a grip and support people who struggle with addiction every day. We need to call out the scourge on our streets and deal with those gangsters once and for all.
