Text
We often revert to our default positions on this issue if we do not want to engage on the wider reform of our education system. As I have said before, there is no consensus on how to deal with academic selection. We have debated it in motions, and we have divided the House on it, but there is not a universal approach to how we are going to deal with it. That is a challenge for all of us. Is this where we would be if we had a clean slate? I think that the answer is no. If we were to start with a blank canvas, I do not think that we would have academic selection in Northern Ireland. I think that we would be able to find a better way, but we have to deal with the systems that we have, and, until there is a different approach that people can argue is the better way to do it, we have to work with the current system while seeking to make improvements. My changes will benefit every single child in every single school, regardless of whether there is academic selection.
