Text
Prison staff, as you know, are members of the Civil Service. That being the case, they are dealt with through Civil Service HR mainstream procedures. However, the support offered to them by the Prison Service itself has been enhanced during my term in office. Initiatives have been introduced on peer support; counselling and access to counselling; enhanced access to the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT), for example, so that those who are, for any reason, exiting the service or require rehabilitation or occupational therapy are able to access that in a safe and secure way. There have been significant improvements, but it would be wrong to suggest that we are at the end of a process. We need to constantly re-evaluate what we can do to support people who do a job that is hidden from view but is, nevertheless, absolutely critical to ensuring that the public are kept safe and that those who are in our custody are able to access rehabilitation and, hopefully, emerge from prison without further reoffending and without creating further victims in the community.
