Text

I thank the Member for giving way. I say firmly that there is nothing to fear from the Irish language. Members of the Protestant community have been some of the biggest advocates of protecting our language and heritage. There is a saying in Irish: ar scáth a chéile a mhaireas na daoine. While it translates literally as "in each other's shadow we live", metaphorically, it means that we rely on each other for shelter from the storm. Would it not be better if that philosophy and approach to our shared language were to be adopted by your party and unionism in general? It is a language that is owned by us all.
