Text
Thank you very much for taking an intervention. There are just a couple of points that I want to refer to. We, too, believe that all farmers should be treated equally, but, as I said in my introduction, all land is not equal. We are talking about farms in severely disadvantaged areas: the scheme creates something to help balance that. John, you said that there was no drop in productivity: there has been a 21% drop in the number of cattle over the past 10 years and a 7% drop in the number of ewes in the last year alone. That is clearly a drop in productivity. Finally, historically, from 2005, entitlements in ANC areas have always been lower than those in other areas. The transition to a flat rate was stopped, so it has not happened. Therefore, there is an historical imbalance, and we feel that restoration of the payment is a step in the right direction to rebalance things.
