Text
A number of steps would have to be taken before the PSNI could use live facial recognition technology. Procedures would have to be put in place, and they would have to be tested by the Policing Board, with input from its human rights adviser. As I have said, however, I do not believe that overly intrusive surveillance of the public is the way in which to build confidence in either the PSNI or the justice system, nor is it the way in which to build confidence in wider society. People have a right to privacy. Provided that that privacy is not a cloak for offending behaviour, it should not be interfered with by the state or anyone else.
