Text
The SORPI arrangements were put in place to recognise the ongoing challenges faced by NI Water, so I do not agree that it is a get-out-of-jail-free card. It is realistic, given what is happening and how we can manage that, particularly given the financial constraints. I have been engaging with the Member's colleague the AERA Minister on his proposal to remove the SORPI arrangement. He gave a statement to the Assembly today on that, and there needs to be further ongoing engagement in relation to that. We have to balance that with the impacts on the ability to meet the required standards if that is introduced. There are so many consequences to absolutely everything that we do. I recognise that we have to take major steps forward to meet our environmental responsibilities, and that is something that I am absolutely committed to doing. We have to do that in a realistic way that recognises the budgetary constraints and the scale of the issues that we are dealing with. I will continue to work with the Minister on that.
