Text

I thank the Member for giving way. Does he agree that the actions of the Irish Government, propped up by the SDLP, Sinn Féin and, indeed, the Alliance Party, should give no succour to anybody in Northern Ireland, including unionists in the House, that they would ever act in our strategic national interest?

Assessment

Not flagged

Not flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.60 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Identity framing (0.74).
  • No identity-based framing was identified (0.54).
  • Subject area: Constitutional question, Brexit, the Windsor Framework and sovereignty.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The intervention invites agreement that the Irish Government, "propped up by" three named parties, would never "act in our strategic national interest", and warns unionists against expecting otherwise. It frames the matter along constitutional lines, setting "our" national interest against an Irish one. However, its target is a government and its political supporters, not a community as a whole, and it uses no loaded language about any group's culture, symbols or place in public life. Distrust of another state's intentions on a constitutional and Brexit-related question is ordinary, if sharp, political argument rather than the identity-based hostility the rubric describes.

Public interest or divisiveness

The contribution offers no substance on what the Irish Presidency or the Irish Government's actions involve, and works mainly as a rhetorical jab at opponents in a debate. Its appeal to unionists and to "our" national interest has a communal edge. Still, it contests the conduct and trustworthiness of a government and parties on a constitutional question, which is legitimate political disagreement rather than grievance against a community, so both elements are present.
