Text
I met Alma White and Caleb, who came into the Building the week before last. It would be fair to say that she was upset and did not understand why, although we are still just over a year away from purdah, there is no time to legislate. She wanted an amendment to the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons (Northern Ireland) Act 1978. I had officials with me, and we tried to talk her through the process to explain why it was impossible to legislate this side of purdah. Then, on Monday of last week, the House rose at 4.00 pm. Therefore, I begin to wonder why we cannot look at the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons (Northern Ireland) Act 1978. I am reassured by my Department that the learning disability service model, which we are starting to think about rolling out together with a delivery plan, matches or exceeds what is available in neighbouring jurisdictions.
We are moving in the right direction, just not as quickly as the Member, I or Alma might like.
