Text

I thank the Member for his important question. My focus in all of it is to make sure that citizens of Northern Ireland can remain safe and get all the advice and messaging that they need at this very difficult time. He is absolutely right: I stand with the Iranians who have suffered from the oppressive, evil regime for many decades. I am absolutely baffled as to why some in the Chamber appear to support that regime. I looked up why that could be, and it was clear that Sinn Féin has had a long-running relationship with the Iranian regime, going back many decades. I do not understand that. That regime oppresses women's rights. It has murdered women for having the audacity to not wear a head shawl. As I said, it has killed people because they are LGBT. It has supported terror, not just across the region but across the globe. It has been an oppressive, evil and murderous regime, and it does not deserve support from any person in the Chamber

Assessment

Not flagged

Not flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.64 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Controversy escalation (0.62).
  • No identity-based framing was identified (0.42).
  • Subject area: Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The answer mainly condemns the Iranian regime and says the speaker stands "with the Iranians who have suffered". It does not portray Iranians, Muslims or any community in Northern Ireland as a group in a hostile way, and it does not map the conflict onto communities here. The sharpest line, that one party "has had a long-running relationship with the Iranian regime" and that some members "appear to support that regime", attacks a party's record and foreign-policy stance rather than accusing it of bigotry towards a community. Under the rubric, that is criticism of a party rather than an identity-based attack.

Public interest or divisiveness

The opening deals with public safety, making sure citizens "get all the advice and messaging that they need", and the criticism of the regime's treatment of women and LGBT people is a legitimate position on a foreign state. However, a substantial part of the answer is partisan point-scoring aimed at a rival party in the Chamber. That adds heat rather than substance, though it is not framed around communal identity.
