Text
There are three issues that came out of the briefing on Saturday afternoon that impact on Northern Ireland. The first is that we have people from Northern Ireland who serve in the UK armed forces in the area and will be deployed in defensive action. Those people will have families in Northern Ireland. The second issue is the impacts on supply chains. The region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, is essential to energy supply and other things. I asked for a point of contact in the Department for Business and Trade to make sure that we are aware of the potential economic shocks, particularly supply chain disruption.
Key to this, however, is the fact that we have thousands of people visiting or working in the UAE in particular and across the wider region. Those people have not been able to leave. Many families here are apprehensive about the safety of their loved ones and friends. We want to make sure that the information is given to them. I raised the issue of people who live in Northern Ireland and travel on various passports because my concern in all this is to make sure that people get the right help and support where and when they need it.
