Text
We would always like to do more when it comes to providing financial support to people. A clear need was identified by principals whom I met, as they were not able to fill vacancies in key subject areas. I engaged with the initial teaching education establishments, which recognised that there had been a shortfall in applicants to those posts. In order to fill the vacancies, we need to create a pipeline of graduates in those specific specialist areas. I am pleased to tell the Assembly that, as a result of the bursary scheme, we are recruiting and attracting people to fill those key subject areas, and we will benefit from that in due course when they graduate. As a result of my intervention, new graduates who move into the teaching profession now start on over £32,000 per year, compared with £23,000, which was the starting salary only two years ago when I came into post.
