Text
I am aware of the concerns that the Chief Constable raised at the Policing Board about the steady growth over recent years in the numbers of people who are retiring under ill-health retirement. The numbers fell fairly consistently during the mid-2000s but started to rise again from around 2020, with the highest figure being recorded in the past year. That is of concern because it is a significant pressure on public funds at a time when, I am sure, the Chief Constable will want those resources to pay for officers who are active. It is also important that those who are genuinely injured and do need to retire on ill-health grounds have recourse to that option. We do not want to be in a situation in which those who gave dedicated public service and are too ill to continue are forced into a situation in which they are at financial disadvantage or, indeed, are forced to take on other work that they are not capable of doing.
