Text
Minister, let me be clear: fraud is unacceptable. Despite what you said in your statement, I do not think that anyone in the Chamber would be annoyed at its eradication. However, while some people abuse the system, the system itself abuses people. Tens of thousands of genuine claimants struggle with a complex, slow and punitive welfare system where genuine mistakes can lead to sanctions and now sackcloth and ashes too. Minister, how much of that £16·7 million has been spent chasing fraudsters and how much has been spent to reduce the stress and suffering caused by a system that creates errors and hardship?
