Text

While it is outside the remit of my Department, I welcome the changes announced to the Motability scheme on the basis that they ensure fairness for the taxpayer while continuing to support disabled people by enabling them to lease a car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. The reforms will not affect eligibility for the Motability scheme; nor will they affect eligibility for the relevant disability benefits provided by my Department that passport access to the scheme. The changes will not apply to the current leases or wheelchair-adapted vehicles, and the scheme will continue to offer vehicles that require no advance payment, meaning that people will still be able to access a suitable vehicle using only their qualifying disability benefit. The Motability Foundation will continue to offer means-tested grants to support eligible people who would otherwise struggle to afford the advance payment or adaptations for a vehicle leased through the scheme.
