Text

My Department introduced a new requirement for Changing Places toilets in local building regulations that came into effect on 30 June 2022. That was an important step for inclusion and equality. Increasing the number of Changing Places toilets will make our public places more accessible and have a significant positive impact on the lives of disabled people, their carers and their families. At the time, the Department assessed that there were around 42 Changing Places toilet facilities locally. It was also estimated that the new requirement could lead to the installation of 12 additional Changing Places toilets each year following a transition period to allow projects to progress from design through to construction and completion. Since the amendment to the building regulations, there has been an almost 100% increase in provision, with 81 local Changing Places toilets now registered with the Changing Places Consortium, although we have no specific breakdown of how the change to building regulations has contributed to that.
