Text
I am not aware of any bonus scheme for senior civil servants. I think that it came to an end a number of years ago. It is easy to take potshots at the Civil Service. It does make mistakes. There are errors made and lessons to be learned. Learning, skill sets and all those sorts of things need to be reviewed. At the end of the day, however, civil servants, 99·9% of the time, are out there delivering public services, engaging with Ministers and Committees and trying to do their best to improve the lives of all the people whom we serve. Do you know why they do that? It is because they are stakeholders. They live here. They use the services here. Their children use the services here. Their parents and grandparents use the services here. They are therefore stakeholders in our society. In my role as Minister with responsibility for the Civil Service, however, I will ensure that, where lessons need to be learned, they will be learned, and that, where we have to make improvements, improvements will be made. I have no qualms about doing that. As I said earlier, whether they are from the report on COVID or from the report on the renewable heat incentive scheme, we, collectively, have lessons to learn.
