Text

To be clear to Mr Carroll, I am less optimistic than I was a couple of weeks ago, but I still think that the situation will be resolved. Even if it leads to strike action — I pray to God that it does not — at some point, the pay issue will have to be resolved. If we allow it to go to strike action, it will have an impact on service delivery, on waiting lists and on staff morale. The bottom line is that, when it is resolved, it will cost more than it would cost to sort it out today. Why does it happen year-on-year? Despite the fact that there is £8·4 billion in the budget, it is not sufficient, and we need to reform how we deliver health and social care so that we can be more efficient, which will make those pay awards more affordable.
