Text

With all due respect, Madam Principal Deputy Speaker, what I am saying is relevant to what we have, which is the hypocrisy of Sinn Féin. It is experiencing today what it inflicted on many people up and down this country through its years of terrorism.

Assessment

Flagged Legacy of the Troubles, victims and paramilitarism

Flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.76 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Identity framing (0.67); Dog-whistle messaging (0.69).
  • The text adopts the identity-based framing in its own voice (0.54).
  • Subject area: Legacy of the Troubles, victims and paramilitarism.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

What a flag means. A flag means the activity contains at least one instance of culture-war framing that met the published test. It does not mean the whole activity is divisive, or that its substantive arguments are wrong.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Verdict
Flagged
Public interest or divisiveness
Mainly advances divisiveness

Against the published rubric

In a Matters of the Day debate on an explosive device left at a party office, the text does not condemn the attack. Instead it turns to "the hypocrisy of Sinn Féin", saying the party "is experiencing today what it inflicted on many people… through its years of terrorism." Its function is to use the debate to re-run a contested Troubles argument against the targeted party, framing the attack as a reversal of past wrongs. That escalates a legacy controversy beyond the practical question of the threat and adopts the framing in the speaker's own voice.

Public interest or divisiveness

The contribution does not address the safety of elected representatives and staff, the investigation, or how to oppose political intimidation, which is the substance of the debate. It uses a moment that called for shared condemnation to score a point over the past, which deepens division rather than opposing it. It mainly advances divisiveness.
