Text
I am acutely aware of the fact that the A5 case is before the Court of Appeal and that there will be an appeal hearing on it. I look forward to the outcome of that appeal hearing, because the issues around the A5 deserve very careful scrutiny and require a legal determination by a court. I am more than satisfied that I acted in a responsible and reasonable manner on the basis of legal advice that I received from a barrister who is now a High Court judge. I do not know what decisions a High Court judge would come to now on the information presented to him and given the different arguments, but that was the level of legal advice that I received at the time. As for expending £200 million, you cannot, on the one hand, criticise me for not delivering projects and then, on the other hand, criticise me for investing to move a project forward. Those two things do not balance. The A5 is a flagship programme for the Executive. Any moneys not used this year will have to be returned to the Executive, and the Executive will decide how those moneys are redistributed.
