Text
I share the Mineral Products Association's concerns, and I have outlined that clearly. The reality is that the budget is nowhere near enough for me to do everything that needs to be done. In fact, as I communicated to the representatives when I met them, the reason that my budget took so long to agree is that I was trying to squeeze money from wherever I could to ensure that we could put more into structural maintenance. It is just not possible at this point. That is unfortunate, but it is the result of over a decade of underfunding through Tory austerity. Everyone in the House knows that and agrees, because we all agreed that we did not get the Budget or the funding that we needed. The Member's colleague can make comments in the background, but I am sure that his colleague who was previously the Infrastructure Minister would agree with me, because she faced the same challenge. Let me tell you this: I will do everything that I can to ensure that we get fair allocations for our roads, particularly rural roads, which are in the worst state that we have ever seen. Take this as a strong commitment from me: I will continue to fight for more money to look after our roads and bring them up to the standard that is acceptable to all.
