Text
I would rather not involve myself in such cases, but there is a reason why I have to do so. The Minister for Infrastructure has taken it upon herself to go against the law; that is the strong advice that I have received. Nobody is above the law — not the Infrastructure Minister, not Sinn Féin. If something is significant, cross-cutting or controversial, it must come to the Executive. That was not done. I gave the Minister time and allowed her the opportunity to rectify the situation without going through the courts, but, unfortunately, that is where we have ended up. The cross-departmental working group on the Irish language strategy has been set up because I want to make sure that we can preserve and promote language, but that cannot be at a cost that is detrimental to the public purse and to other things that we want to do, so we have put the group together to make sure that any actions are affordable.
