Text
I welcome the opportunity to speak in support of the Agriculture Bill, and I clearly support its intentions. It marks a long-overdue step towards bespoke agricultural policy for Northern Ireland — one that reflects our scale, land, climate and way of farming. The emphasis on food security, environmental sustainability, innovation and market resilience is timely and necessary. We have already seen how vulnerable food supply chains can be. Whether it is due to Brexit, the war in Ukraine, climate shocks or labour shortages, that can be a problem. In theory, the Bill gives the Department the tools to act to support farming in a more forward-looking way. However, if we are talking about having a system that is tailored to Northern Ireland's needs, support for clause 2 to stand part of the Bill must be subject to one sector's getting the attention and support that it deserves. I call on the Minister to reflect on methods and ways in which to support the mushroom sector. Agus sin an méid atá le rá agam. Go raibh míle maith agat.
