Text
I join Members in condemning the actions of last night. This time yesterday, we were all aware of one family who were suffering the consequences of what happened in Ballymena. They had a protest last night and were right to do so, as many Members have recognised today, but, as the night unfolded, there were more victims. No one has mentioned the police officers who put themselves on the line last night
to try to restore calm and peace. Sorry, maybe —. I apologise. I listened to the radio on the way here this morning and heard that 10 police officers were injured. Those 10 police officers left their families yesterday to do a day's work to protect our communities. They put themselves on the front line to restore calm and order on the streets of Ballymena last night. Unfortunately, those 10 officers were hospitalised or went home with injuries. That is despicable, and we call for calm, but we still stand in solidarity with the family who called for the protest last night, as they were entitled to do. The actions of a few, as Members have remarked, are unacceptable. They need to stop — stop quickly — before this gets out of hand.
