Text
I condemn the violence that took place in my home town of Ballymena last night. I feared that it was going to happen. I have been warning that there has been a lot of tension in Ballymena over the past number of weeks and months. Alas, those warnings have come true. It is with a heavy heart that I say that we know people in my home town and the surrounding villages who have been affected grievously over the past 24 hours. That is wrong. Violence is wrong. I have fought and campaigned my whole life against violence of every hue. We must condemn the violence of last night. That should not dilute the message from the thousands of people who turned up last night in Ballymena to protest against violence against women and girls and to show solidarity and sympathy with and support to the families and victims affected by the heinous crimes that have taken place in the town over the past number of weeks. The answer is our justice system. Violence is not the answer to anything. Violence is wrong, no matter what quarter it comes from and no matter whom it targets. My sympathy goes out to everyone who has been affected by violence, sexual or otherwise, in my constituency over the past number of weeks and months. It has to end. People must feel safe in their home towns and in the streets that they have to walk when they go to work, when they socialise and when they meet friends. Violence from every quarter has to stop.
