Text
In the last year for which figures are available, 25% of children in Northern Ireland were in poverty. In the whole of the UK, that figure was 31%. It is not acceptable that one in four children in Northern Ireland lives in poverty, and I am determined to change that by making sure that, as an Executive, we focus on all the issues that I have outlined. In tackling poverty and child poverty we need to take a whole-system approach. We have identified the issues. We have got the work and got the literature, including all the reviews that have been done of this. We know what the issues are. Hopefully, in the coming week, I will bring forward the three-pillar approach of making sure that we reduce the risk of people falling into poverty, minimise the impacts of it and help people to escape it.
