Text

I join others in wishing you a happy birthday, Mr Speaker. I am sure that there is nowhere that you would rather be. The implementation of voting rights in Irish presidential elections is a matter for the Government of Ireland, not the Assembly, but, on a point of fact, can the First Minister confirm that the motion passed by the convention was for voting rights for all Irish citizens, with no specific requirement for them to be resident on the island of Ireland and that that would bring those elections into line with common practice in the EU and elsewhere?
