Text
I thank the Member for his question. We all recognise the importance of carers and the key role that they play in our society and in our economy. That is why we have stated that, in the first instance, we will introduce an unpaid entitlement of up to five days in a rolling 12-month period for those who have a caring responsibility for a relative or dependant. I have been clear that my desire is for that to be a paid entitlement, and my Department will take the legal powers to introduce a paid carer's leave entitlement. I have also been honest about the fact that we have challenging financial circumstances that everybody will be well rehearsed in, and it will be for the Executive to discuss whether that can be funded from our own resources. I understand that a review of carer's leave is being undertaken in England as well, so, if it is introduced at a future point by the British Government, we will be able to follow suit here immediately.
