Text
Following the flooding in 2023, my Department commissioned a consultant to undertake a feasibility study to determine whether there were viable options to alleviate the threat of flooding in Downpatrick. The study is using information not only from the 2023 flooding incident but from additional historical records. A detailed computer model of the river has been created to simulate flooding events in order to assist with the identification of possible engineering solutions. Once the flood risks are fully understood, the list of potential solutions will be carefully investigated and assessed for viability. To do that properly can be quite a lengthy process. I am pleased, however, to be able to inform the Member that substantial progress has been made, and it is currently anticipated that the feasibility report will be completed in the coming weeks.
