Text
The media have strongly profiled the issue. Last week, I was with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service in Ballynahinch and Lisburn, and we put out media updates subsequent to that visit to raise the profile of the practical implications. We have a role, as elected representatives, to profile the communications and encourage people with any information to bring it forward to the police, because we need prosecutions. We need to see people in court, but that requires people who are prepared to give evidence. We also need to be conscious that what people may see as a localised fire can very quickly spread and have devastating consequences. People need to be very conscious about their behaviour in the countryside. We have seen that people have lost their life in other parts of the world, and that is my concern about the wildfires.
