Text

Thank you. Let us be very clear that the Supreme Court is the court. It is the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. It is made up of people who sit and make a judgement on such legal matters. It is a matter of biology as well. A woman is a woman. I am a woman. I know what I am. With the greatest respect to the Member, as I said, we can engage in debate on this in a respectful way, but there are, nevertheless, strong views, and they should be respected. I have a strong view, as do many women and others, that the Supreme Court was correct, and they look forward to seeing its judgement being implemented in a way that does not harass or demean people but protects women.

Assessment

Flagged Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues

Flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.54 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Identity framing (0.73).
  • The text adopts the identity-based framing in its own voice (0.65).
  • Subject area: Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

What a flag means. A flag means the activity contains at least one instance of culture-war framing that met the published test. It does not mean the whole activity is divisive, or that its substantive arguments are wrong.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 23 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The contribution responds to a question on a Supreme Court judgment, which is a legitimate subject, but it offers almost nothing on how the ruling would be implemented in Northern Ireland. Its centre is the familiar flashpoint line "It is a matter of biology as well. A woman is a woman. I am a woman. I know what I am," which implicitly denies trans women's identity. It ends by framing implementation as something that "protects women", casting the issue as women against trans people. The calls for respectful debate and for implementation that "does not harass or demean people" soften the tone but do not change the main thrust.

Public interest or divisiveness

There is some public-interest content: the text acknowledges the court's authority, appeals for respectful engagement and says implementation should not harass or demean anyone. But the substance of how the judgment would affect services, law or people here is not addressed. Most of the text restates a position on a recognised identity flashpoint in slogan form, invoking "many women and others", so the divisive element is at least as substantial as the de-escalating one.
