Text
No, I would like to make some progress. It is worth noting that steps to combat climate change in Northern Ireland, including the appointment of a commissioner, are to be matched by a just transition fund for agriculture, which is now in place at £12 million. However, climate change is by no means just about agriculture, despite the fact that our departmental set-up puts Agriculture and Environment together. The very reason for having a commissioner appointed by the Executive Office is that climate change is a cross-cutting issue. We need to do much more on clean energy, which falls to the Department for the Economy. We need to do much more on active travel, which falls to the Department for Infrastructure. Clean air is a Health issue as well as an environmental one. Preparing the next generation for climate-friendly living is an Education issue. The allocation of resources to combat climate change and reduce pollution falls to Finance and even, in some instances, councils. That is why the matter cannot be left to a single Department and why we support the regulations today.
