Text
When you look at figures such as those, it is easy to make presumptions about why they are as they are. We know, for example — the Member is very vocal on this — that offending behaviours are often linked to deprivation. We also know that many parts of the community that are nominally Catholic tend to have higher levels of deprivation. We therefore have to be careful before making a case for institutional bias. We have to look at the underlying causes of offending behaviour, and we need to unpack all of that. It is absolutely my view that, at all points, justice has to be blind to people's religion, politics and so on. It needs to treat each individual with dignity and respect and, ultimately, with fairness and equality.
