Text
I am happy to meet the Member to discuss any specific issues in the east Belfast area. I am conscious that, across the city, there have been a number of disturbances at interfaces. Not all of those have been the normal interface disputes. Some have been due to roving gangs of young people who assemble around the interfaces to engage, often, initially, in social activity, and then it moves on to something slightly more sinister. It is important, first of all, to look at the money that we give to policing and community safety partnerships (PCSPs) to support their interface work, as well as the work that goes through the Department of Education in the tackling paramilitarism programme, which works with young people who are at risk of offending. There are lots of opportunities for us to get involved if we know where particular problems are. Ultimately, it is much better that we prevent offences than convict people for them. We do not want young people to have criminal convictions and criminal records. We want them to grow up healthy, safe and free from intimidation or threat.
