Text

I thank the Member for his important question. It is absolutely key that we move forward in this place with that sense of fairness and equity. That must be based on the best person for the job, not on discriminatory practices. That is fundamental if this place is going to move forward. I want to encourage as many people as possible from across all backgrounds in Northern Ireland to step up and join the PSNI and to play a role in the PSNI. It is a positive thing for people to come forward from all sides of the community. We want to see that. However, discrimination is always wrong. The appointments should always be on the basis of merit and merit alone.
