Text

I have made my position on that very clear. Libraries NI should offer a safe place. Parents should and must have confidence in the books that are available, and we need to make sure that we do everything that we can to protect children. I have made my views clear to the board of Libraries NI — to the chairman and the chief executive. I hope that the people who agree with where the Member and I are coming from make sure that their views are made known, because I do not believe that the majority of parents would agree with some of the literature and books that have been made available in our libraries. It is right that we stand up and speak out against it.

Assessment

Flagged Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues

Flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.49 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Controversy escalation (0.63).
  • No identity-based framing was identified (0.62).
  • Subject area: Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

What a flag means. A flag means the activity contains at least one instance of culture-war framing that met the published test. It does not mean the whole activity is divisive, or that its substantive arguments are wrong.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The text does not name the books concerned, but it frames them as something children must be protected from and calls on those who share "where the Member and I are coming from" to make their views known. This appears to be the recognised flashpoint over gender and sexuality titles in public libraries, raised here during questions on women's sport. It pits "the majority of parents" against "some of the literature", which matches the rubric's danger-to-children and majority-versus-minority patterns. It sets out no criteria, policy or practical safeguarding test, so the practical content is thin compared with the call to "stand up and speak out against it".

Public interest or divisiveness

Child safeguarding and library stock policy are legitimate public concerns. Here, though, the contribution mainly registers disapproval and mobilises one side of a contested issue, rather than explaining a decision, a standard or an evidenced harm. Appealing to what the majority would accept, and urging supporters to press an arm's-length body, deepens a culture-war dispute over whose values public libraries should reflect. It does little to resolve the substance of that dispute.
