Text
The work of prison officers is challenging, complex and often overlooked, but it is critical to the safety and security of Northern Ireland and of people who are held in custody. In 2020, there were 32 assaults on staff; in 2021, there were 71; in 2022, there were 66; in 2023, there were 59; and, in 2024, there were 96. The Prison Service's experience is that a higher population and crowding are the most significant factors contributing to prison instability, incidents and violence. Any assault on a prison officer is unacceptable, and the Prison Service continues to maintain a clear focus on the safety of staff at establishments. In addition to the support services available to all civil servants and in recognition of the front-line challenging role of prison officers, the Northern Ireland Prison Service provides additional support to officers through the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT).
