Text

We had another statement filled with sanctimonious slurs from the Alliance Party. It is right that that is called out by the Minister and others on these Benches. The Minister has rightly identified a problem and is taking action to address it. In his statement, he talked about changing the system or changing nothing. Does the Minister agree that there also needs to be a change in mindset from some Members? Instead of racing to shameful slurs on Lisneal College, they should, on the other hand, look at clear and practical examples of where schools that are in need receive appropriate funding from the Department to ensure that they can carry on with providing quality education for all our children.

Assessment

Not flagged

Not flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.55 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • None of the five culture-war criteria was met (each was below 0.60).
  • The text criticises or condemns the framing or division (0.57).
  • Subject area: Education structures, integration and community division.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The contribution mostly criticises another party for "sanctimonious slurs" and "shameful slurs on Lisneal College", and backs the Minister's approach to support for controlled schools. It does not frame the issue as a contest between communities, does not portray any community or its culture negatively, and accuses the party of unfair criticism of a school rather than of bigotry or sectarianism. Its closing point, that schools in need should receive "appropriate funding" to provide "quality education for all our children", is a practical one, so it does not meet the rubric's tests for culture-war activity.

Public interest or divisiveness

The text is largely partisan point-scoring aimed at another party, with little scrutiny of the Minister's statement beyond agreeing with it. But that point-scoring is about political conduct, not identity, and the contribution ends on school funding and education quality for all children. Both the partisan attack and the policy point are substantial, so the balance is mixed rather than mainly divisive in the identity sense.
