Text
I agree with the Member that listening is absolutely important. As Minister of Health, I listen to people, not just those in the Department. I listen to anecdotes, but, more importantly, I like to listen to people who are at — to use an old-fashioned phrase — the coalface. I do that all the time. I was in a care home on Christmas morning, listening to some of the staff talking about the challenges that they have in delivering for their service users. It is really important to listen. It is also important to set a direction of travel. I think that the Member will recognise that I have set a direction of travel, which is to shift left in order to try to take the emphasis off curing people who, in many cases, have become acutely ill and need an acute hospital, and to put the emphasis on community, primary and social care, and on prevention and early intervention. It is about making sure that people do not need to go to an acute hospital, unless that need is absolutely acute.
