Text

On a point of order, Mr Speaker. Is it in order for a Minister to wilfully misinterpret what a Member has said? The record will show that what I actually said during Justice Question Time was that self-identification presented an opportunity for predators to exploit the system. At no time did I equate or link trans and predators. It is interesting that, in labelling me and attempting to admonish me, the Minister ended up linking them by inferring something that was not there. I am confident that the record will show that I am not anti-trans. Instead, I am anti-predator.

Assessment

Qualifying Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues

Decided as qualifying on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.61 (qualifying needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not qualifying).
  • Criteria met: Controversy escalation (0.69).
  • The text criticises or condemns the framing or division (0.39).
  • Subject area: Gender, sexuality, abortion and related social issues.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Against the published rubric

The contribution is raised as a point of order, but it has no procedural or policy request of substance. Its content restates, for the record, the claim that "self-identification presented an opportunity for predators to exploit the system" and closes with "I am not anti-trans. Instead, I am anti-predator". Although the member expressly denies linking trans people and predators, the text re-asserts a recognised gender-identity flashpoint in which trans recognition is framed through the risk of predators. It does so without engaging with any measure, evidence or decision, which fits the rubric's concern with tropes about predators and self-identification.

Public interest or divisiveness

Correcting what one regards as a misrepresentation of one's own words is a legitimate use of the Chamber, and the member does disavow hostility to trans people. However, the main effect is to extend a row with a minister over trans issues, restating the contested framing and turning the charge back on the minister ("the Minister ended up linking them"), rather than dealing with the substance of any policy. Both elements are substantial, but the continuation of an identity row is the stronger function.
