Text
My Department does not provide financial support to councils to address dog fouling. It is, however, responsible for the legislation that grants councils the powers and the flexibility, subject to upper and lower limits, to set fixed penalty notices for dog-fouling offences. In December 2022, following requests from key stakeholders and members of the public to take stronger action over dog-fouling offences, my officials amended the legislation to increase the maximum penalty available to councils for such offences from £80 to £200, and some councils have since increased their fixed penalties.
