Text

XL bully legislation has already been implemented in England, Wales and Scotland. When I decided to introduce legislation in Northern Ireland, I did so in that context and to protect public safety. The legislation introduced here is broadly similar to the legislation introduced in the rest of the UK, although Northern Ireland will not implement a deregistration process. The Republic of Ireland has also made it illegal to breed, sell or import XL bully dogs since 1 October 2024. The deadline for exemption applications is 1 February 2025. A while ago, I met the relevant Minister, Heather Humphreys, to discuss the issues and the need for continued cross-border collaboration on them, of which a significant amount already occurs.
