Text
Every prisoner who is committed to our care, whether on sentence or on remand, will be asked questions and can share information with us, up to the point that they wish to do so, about any historical issues with their mental health or with addiction. There are therapeutic services, but they are provided not by the Prison Service but by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, as is all of the healthcare for prisoners. There are other interventions that are made in the prison setting to deal with addiction, with the trauma that often predates the addiction and with mental health issues and to provide the correct support. The key to this is to ensure that that through-the-door support continues and that there is continuity of provision in the community. Unfortunately, as many Members will recognise from working with their constituents, it is the lack of community-based interventions around addiction and mental health that is often the stumbling block for people on release from prison rather than the absence of those supports in the prison.
