Text

We discussed a number of things. The Secretary of State took the opportunity to update us on UK policy on international students, which is important for our universities in Northern Ireland. She also gave a commitment that she and the Labour Government stood over the Command Paper 'Safeguarding the Union'. In that paper, there are a number of commitments in respect of which she reiterated her support for delivering on. One of them is the establishment of a twinning programme between schools in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, which will be overseen by the United Kingdom's East-West Council. That is a real opportunity, and I confirm that my officials are working with officials in the Department for Education in England to take it forward. There are a number of potential benefits to the twinning programme between primary schools in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. It will enable the diversity of the Union to be experienced by a wider range of young people. It will build on our shared connections and demonstrate the value of Northern Ireland's integral place in the United Kingdom.
