Text
The easiest thing that we can do to deal with the over-reliance on emergency accommodation is make sure that we have more housing in Northern Ireland, and I am absolutely committed to achieving that. There are a number of ways that we can do that. I will bring forward the housing supply strategy very soon to make sure that, for the first time, we have a cross-departmental plan in place to deal with the issue. The other big thing that we can do — I encourage all Members around the House to support this — is make sure that the Government confirm that the Housing Executive can borrow on the same basis as housing associations elsewhere in the UK. I want to do everything that I can to make sure that we assist those who are dealing with homelessness right now, but, in the longer term, I want to make it easier and cheaper to build more homes, and that is where our focus should be.
