Text
The Member will be aware that waiting lists are just terrible. It is easy to say that they are the worst in the UK, but we have to remember that the statistics reflect people who are in pain, who are suffering and who need help. The fact is that, given the budgetary constraints, what we are doing is trying to consolidate services. When it comes to cancer, we are trying to prioritise red-flag and life-threatening conditions. Really, given the current budget and the limited ability to reform health service delivery at pace, I am afraid that I cannot promise the House that we can do a lot better over the rest of the financial year, except to assure the Member that, when I meet officials and talk to clinicians, we all recognise that we have to try harder and do better. I cannot promise the Member any sort of promised land in the near future.
